Nice blog post, and a nice way to tie it in to a lot of other issues.

(Isma's first reaction was less the why couldn't you have said this during the series but indignation that Rowling reverted to such an old stereotype and gave the one gay character a tragic and unfulfilled love life.)

Yeah, I've heard that from a couple other people as their first reaction, too. It's annoying -- but I guess I tend to put it in the context of Snape/Lily, and figure that Rowling has a soft spot for angst. I probably would have more criticism of the stereotype if I didn't feel like Rowling's obviously calculated failure to mention it was tantamount to erasure.

From Kat Allen's LJ:
"Rowling remarked that if she had known that (applause) would be the response, she would've revealed her thoughts on Dumbledore earlier."

That kind of gives me the shivers. Gay people are only worth writing about if the reaction is applause.

What galls me is the fact that everyone assumed straight was the default.

There was a chance he was gay anyway. Why is everyone so surprised?
