I am home in Madrid again.

My luggage, alas, is in Heathrow.

With luck, it will be delivered to me tomorrow.

Keep your fingers crossed!

The British airport trick where they won't allow you to carry two bags onto the plane and lose most of the checked bags is rather tiresome... it isn't the airline, it's the subcontractor that runs the airport---they appear to feel that screening two carryons per passenger is too much work.

Does Heathrow only allow one carry-on bag? If so, that's useful to know--since we were thinking of going all-carryon to Basel in the fall, and the flight we're looking at goes through Heathrow--but that would probably be a two-bag affair, seeing as how we're packing for a wedding and to go hiking both.

Yes, Heathrow allows only one carry-on bag. Absolutely and only one. Not "your purse/laptop bag/book tote plus a suitcase" but one. If you buy stuff in duty-free after security, you can bring that on, though. The rule applies to all airlines and to all classes of passengers.

I believe they can also get shirty about the size.

To get to Basel, it might be easier to go to Frankfurt or Zurich and take a train. Heathrow and BA are much, much to be avoided these days.

The problem being that any other route there (we've been look at Zurich; also Frankfurt, though with the train costs it'd have to be way cheaper) involves relying somewhat on U.S. airlines, who are shutting down routes to our part of the world left and right. I keep thinking that at least BA's flight will still be there in a few months. While friends flying U.S. airlines are getting flights changed and cancelled left and right, it seems. (One friend even got told on 12 hours notice she had to fly out a day early or leave 3-4 days later; and rerouting keeps adding hours and stops, too.)

Too bad we can't just go by Amtrak and boat ...

Putting myself in your shoes, I think your most secure routing might be to go via LA. Yes, it adds time and a leg to an already-long journey, but you should be able to get more options to Europe from LA and have a much lower chance of cancellation than on the home-to-LA leg. But if cancellation's really a fear anyway, do buy travel insurance.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. On my last trip to the UK, my luggage stayed in Heathrow while I went to Manchester. It arrived in Manchester while I was at a conference in Liverpool. It arrived in Liverpool while I was on my way back to Manchester to fly to Rome.

It finally caught up with us in Rome, six days after becoming lost.
